Applying internationally means more than translating your resume. Each market has different expectations for length, personal details, photo use, and section order. The one constant: online applications almost always pass through ATS, so parseability comes first.

Universal Rules for International ATS

  • Single-column, text-based PDF or DOCX
  • Standard English section headings
  • No photo for US, UK, Canada, Australia applications
  • Phone number with country code (+91, +1, +44)
  • 1–2 pages maximum for most roles

United States & Canada

  • Resume (not CV) for industry roles; 1 page for <10 years experience
  • Do not include age, marital status, photo, or nationality
  • Month/year date format: Jan 2022 – Mar 2024
  • Summary preferred over objective statement
  • Skills section heavily keyword-scanned by ATS

United Kingdom & Europe

  • CV term common; 2 pages acceptable for experienced candidates
  • Generally no photo for UK; some EU countries still expect it for local roles
  • Include language skills with proficiency levels (CEFR: B2, C1)
  • GDPR-aware: don't include unnecessary personal data

India (Applying Abroad from India)

  • Create a separate "international" version without photo, father's name, or full address
  • Convert CGPA to context if needed ("8.2/10 CGPA, equivalent to First Class")
  • Highlight English fluency through clear writing and international projects
  • Mention visa status only if the application asks
  • Use LinkedIn URL — global recruiters check it

Remote Global Roles

For remote positions with US/EU companies, follow the target company's primary market norms. When unsure, use the US format — it's the safest default for tech and ATS compatibility worldwide.

Date and Location Formatting

Be consistent. Pick one style: "Mar 2021 – Present" or "03/2021 – Present." For location, city and country suffice: "Bangalore, India" or "London, UK." Omit full street addresses internationally.

Tailor for Each Country's Job Description

Keyword expectations differ by market. A UK fintech JD may emphasise "FCA compliance" while a US role says "SEC regulations." Always paste the specific JD into a resume checker before submitting.

Final Checklist

  • Country-appropriate personal details (minimal)
  • Country code on phone number
  • ATS-safe format verified with scanner
  • Keywords matched to local job description
  • Spelling: US English vs UK English consistent throughout
